IEA takes part in Mission Innovation and Clean Energy Ministerial meetings in India

The IEA took part in the eighth Ministerial of Mission Innovation (MI) on 21 July, organised alongside the Clean Energy Ministerial in Goa, India. The gathering took place days after the IEA published its annual Tracking Clean Energy Progress report, which shows that innovation in clean energy technologies needs to accelerate to get on track with the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario.

The IEA has been supporting MI, a global initiative to catalyse action and investment in research and development and demonstration of clean energy projects, since it was launched in 2015. The Agency’s contributions have included collecting and analysing data on clean energy innovation, providing guidance and facilitating knowledge sharing on good policy practice, and connecting MI Missions with the Technology Collaboration Programme to strengthen international collaboration. In particular, the IEA leads global tracking of public budgets for energy research and development with a dataset going back to the 1970s. The data shows that in 2022, MI Members spent USD 10.6 billion in some of the highest priority areas for clean energy innovation, a USD 750 million increase relative to 2021.

Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, said: "The increased spending on clean energy research and development by MI members highlights the growing momentum behind the new energy economy. But much more still needs to be done to move the global energy sector towards net zero emissions and limit global warming to 1.5 °C.” The IEA is underpinning efforts to reach these goals through its work across the full spectrum of clean energy technologies including the analysis in Energy Technology Perspectives and the Clean Energy Technology Guide, and through the IEA’s Technology Collaboration Programme that connects thousands of researchers from around the globe to advance the research, development and commercialisation of energy technologies.
