In our newspaper “Udarnik Metrostroy” No. 254 dated November 13, 1940, a photograph by V. Kasyanov of the reversible dead ends behind the Stalin Plant station was published. This is exactly what the now well-known Avtozavodskaya was called back then.
Metro construction workers began work on distance No. 21 at the junction of 1937 and 1938. Driving the sheet pile, removing rock from the pit. Then monolithic work. By 1940, the station and turnaround cul-de-sacs were mostly ready. Moreover, in February 1941, finishing work began at the station. Everything was heading towards a speedy start, but the war got in the way.
The Avtozavodskaya station was opened on January 1, 1943 as part of the Zamoskvoretsky radius. Wartime required simplifying the technical design of launch lines. For example, in the station's reversible dead ends, of the four installed switches, only two had electrical centralization. The remaining two were translated manually. The second photo was taken today by Alexander Popov.
