A ski jump is being built on Vorobyovy Gory. The design was carried out by the Inzhproekt Institute. Alexey Kosygin, General Director of the Inzhproekt Institute, told us what calculations were used to create a complex sports facility.

The 72-meter ski jump on the slope of the Vorobyovy Gory was built in 1953 and dismantled in 2016 due to its emergency condition
Almost 70 years ago, a 72-meter ski jump opened its doors. As the years passed, the sports facility underwent reconstruction and modernization. There were several reasons for closing the sports facility in 2016: it was necessary to strengthen the bank of the Moscow River, carry out anti-landslide measures and make a new ski jump profile. He no longer met the current requirements of the International Ski Federation (FIS). And the structures themselves fell into disrepair.
“The Institute has developed design documentation for the reconstruction of the ski jump in accordance with the current FIS standards, allowing for international competitions,” explained Alexey Kosygin. The springboard is now a unique structure.
“In a place like Vorobyovy Gory, it is impossible to place just a sports facility; it was necessary to come up with a sign, a dominant feature, a structure that is not inferior in beauty to the most modern sports facilities in the world, but also harmoniously fits into the surrounding buildings and territory,” he continued. – In my opinion, it worked out. The architects managed to combine beauty and technology.
The new springboard is a whole complex of structures. It includes a launch tower and the ski jump itself, consisting of acceleration hills, landing hills and a roll-out zone. There was a place for a physical education and sports school, a referee tower and a pumping station with a cooling tower.
The institute’s specialists, together with representatives of the international association and the Russian Federation of ski jumpers, performed a whole range of technical calculations: trajectory, aerodynamics, snowmaking systems, irrigation and other factors affecting the parameters of the structure.
“To eliminate the influence of landslide processes, solutions are provided for the engineering protection of the slope area, consisting of the construction of retaining walls, pile fields made of bored piles, as well as the installation of the main structures of the facility on a pile-slab grillage,” added Alexey Kosygin.
After the opening of the springboard, training and competitions in jumping and Nordic combined can be held here among adult athletes, juniors, older boys and girls.
“The uniqueness of the structure is also in the fact that its operation is possible in winter and summer,” emphasized Alexey Kosygin. – In winter, training is carried out on an artificial ski track with ice freezing, the landing mountain and the run-out area are snowed with snow generators. And in the summer, the acceleration track, the landing hill and the run-out area with a special coating of the jumps are continuously wetted with water. The maximum number of students per day at the facility can reach 80 people. After the project is implemented, the springboard is planned to be included in the Vorobyovy Gory sports cluster, which unites sports schools, colleges, scientific laboratories and universities that train athletes.

Project of a new 75-meter springboard

The first ski jump appeared on Vorobyovy Gory in 1936. It was designed for jumps of 40-50 meters in length, but has not survived to this day.
In 1953, a complex of 4 springboards (designed for jumps of 45, 25 and 10 meters and a 72-meter springboard, which was given the name “Bolshoy”) and a chairlift, connecting the sports facilities with the embankment, opened on the slope, designed by engineer Alexander Galli.
At that time, the Big Springboard was the best in the country and became a platform for both national and international competitions. After reconstruction, the length of the ski jump should increase to 75 meters.
