Going down to the museum

Underground Moscow is more diverse than it seems. You can get acquainted with it in the new museum, which opened in the former civilian bomb shelter of the Krasnopresnensky sugar refinery named after. Mantulina.

The exhibition, dedicated to fortifications, secret bunkers, the subway, quarries and other underground objects, is a contact one: visitors literally have the opportunity to touch the artifacts, some of which are interactive. The museum also has a lecture hall.

The series of lectures was opened by Mosmetrostroy photographer and Moscow metro researcher Alexander Popov (Russos). As the author himself noted: “Passengers see 30–40% of what has been built. The rest is hidden from them - these are technical rooms.” Rich material, illustrated with shots from the photographer’s personal archive, introduced listeners to the structure of the technical zones of the capital’s subway, as well as interesting facts and myths about it.

In his lectures, Alexander Popov pays special attention to the work of Mosmetrostroy. For example, in a series about the first stages of the metro, he talks about the technologies that metro builders used at that time. In the lecture hall you can also hear other speakers - experts in various areas of underground topics, ranging from the capital's rivers and drains to the successful search for the secret "metro-2" in Washington.

The Museum "Underground Moscow" is located at the address: Mantulinskaya street, building 7, building 33, next to the metro stations "Vystavochnaya" of the Filevskaya line and "Business center" of the BKL and Solntsevsky radius. In addition, you can visit another project of the team - “Bunker 703”, the former special archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a depth of 43 meters in Zamoskvorechye.
