Ivan Gagarin, an honored veteran of Mosmetrostroy, the famous foreman of electricians, who worked in our organization from 1953 to 2002, turned 95 years old in September.

Gagarin was born in the village of Grishovskaya, Konosha district, Arkhangelsk region. His career at Metrostroy began after serving in the Soviet Army. He was accepted into the Office of Installation of Switchboards and Escalators, already having the specialty of an electrician. Ivan Dmitrievich received this specialty while serving in the signal troops. And at Metrostroy he became a highly qualified specialist in the installation of underground tunneling mechanisms, escalators and electrical equipment with the 5th group of electrical safety clearance. In February 1960, in connection with the merger of enterprises, he was transferred to SMU-4, which specialized in such work

In 1961, as part of a large group of metro builders, he was sent to Afghanistan to build the main irrigation tunnels of the Jalalabad Canal. With the technical assistance of Soviet metro builders, five tunnels with a total length of 9 km were built. Gagarin worked there until 1965. Later, in 1985, there was another business trip: complex electrical installation work was required at the USSR Embassy in Luxembourg. And Ivan Dmitrievich is famous for this: he did everything that was entrusted to him perfectly.

With his active participation, more than 150 km of lines, more than 25 stations and other facilities of the Moscow metro were built. He is one of those legendary metro builders who were called the elite of the working class. Gagarin's team completed work of any complexity with excellent quality in a short time. Ivan Dmitrievich was an innovator and boldly introduced innovations and rationalization proposals, provided the team with safe working conditions (he was awarded at the Ministry level for work without injuries and accidents throughout the 9th Five-Year Plan). He demanded a conscientious attitude towards completing tasks and improved the production culture by personal example. He raised young people: “If you do it for decades, do it carefully, reliably, so that you won’t be ashamed in front of your children and grandchildren.”

Ivan Gagarin is known for his active social work. For many years he was a member of the party committee, the Presidium of the Council of Veterans of Mosmetrostroy, and after retiring - of the Sokolniki district of Moscow.
