Unraveling the web of communications

The construction of the Stromynka station on the north-eastern section of the Big Circle Line continues on Sokolnicheskaya Square. Already at the exit from Sokolniki you can hear that work is in full swing. Several metro construction organizations are involved in the construction, simultaneously performing complex tasks. Workers are removing numerous communications crossing the construction site underground and on the surface, and erecting enclosing structures.

“Stromynka” is literally sandwiched on all sides by houses and shopping centers. Dense buildings and old engineering infrastructure are the main difficulties during construction.

– Before constructing this station, it is necessary to remove numerous communications. Since the area is old, there are a lot of them: a heating network, sewerage, water supply, MGTS networks, cables from MOESK and OEK, rainwater drainage,” explains Deputy Chief Engineer of SMU-12 Viktor Panov.

The construction of the Stromynka station began in July 2017. The work on relaying the networks is approximately 60 percent completed. Now the builders are faced with an important task - to shift and switch heating networks before the start of the heating season.

– This work was undertaken by specialists from SMU-12 and SMU-25. The former also deal with rainwater drainage, the latter with electrical networks, clarifies Panov.

Profile organizations specializing in the removal of the MGTS network, water supply and sewerage are also working here separately.

In parallel, construction is underway with the help of SMS and SMU-12 enclosing structures of the pit made of secant and soil-cement piles. About 70 percent of the work has already been completed.

– There is still a lot to do. Soon we will begin to select soil from the pit. “Afterwards, we will begin the construction of the station,” Panov describes the plans.

Taking into account the removal of all networks, the construction of the enclosing structures will be completed by the beginning of 2019.

“Stromynka” is designed as a shallow station. Nevertheless, the foundation pit for its construction will be at a depth of 27 meters. It is divided into three parts.

– The first is vestibule No. 2, from which the development of the pit of the station complex begins. Tunnel boring mechanized complexes going to Stromynka from Rubtsovskaya will be accepted here. From this pit the TBMs start towards Rzhevskaya. Then they will excavate areas for the platform and for vestibule No. 1,” says Panov.

It is planned to begin construction of the station structures by the end of 2019. There are two exits to the city from “Stromynka”: to the street of the same name and to Rusakovskaya from the first lobby, to the Resurrection Church from the second.

At the same time, work is underway to mechanize construction.

Burous secant piles make it possible to build in areas with loose, unstable soil and on water-logged areas areas. This construction method involves installing piles in such a way that they literally cling to one another. The resulting wall does not allow the soil to crumble or water to penetrate into the pit.
