Anatoly Semushkin: the most valuable thing is a person

We continue our traditional “Frankly Speaking” column. Its heroes are employees of the Mosmetrostroy group of companies, who share their rules of life with readers and speak honestly about themselves. This time we talked with the General Director of SMS Metrostroy LLC Anatoly Semushkin. He told how his childhood passed, what service in the ranks of the Soviet Army taught him, who influenced his development, how his working morning begins and why the word “I’ll try” is not in his vocabulary.

My childhood was spent in the countryside. Without pioneer camps and trips to the sea, at work. He was not a completely obedient child who had his own opinion. At the same time, he always studied well and had a good memory. Favorite subjects are mathematics and physics. Upon graduation, he was awarded a Certificate “For Special Achievements in Physics.”

Mom said that I was “a plug in every barrel.” Indeed, I have always participated in various events, amateur performances, and was the chairman of the detachment council in the pioneer organization.

Sports competitions gave us a taste of victory. Like everyone else, I didn’t like and don’t like losing.

He served in the Soviet Army as a shift supervisor at a communications center in the GSVG. This period taught the concept of responsibility, especially for one's signature. Here I realized the importance of a team and human trust.

I have always strived for independence and responsibility for my actions. He chose the profession of a mining engineer. In Mosmetrostroy he started with SMU-4, and came to the construction of Sevastopol. I didn’t regret a single day about how everything turned out.

I've been lucky with people in life. At different periods, I met those who helped a lot, participated in my formation, the formation of my thinking. Among them are Hero of the Soviet Union Alexander Morukhov, Lyudmila Kosaretskaya, Alexander Zakharov, Ezar Sandukovsky.

The leader must form a team. Entrust your leading specialists with the work and not interfere. Then the organization will develop and live. If the manager takes everything on himself, there will be gaps in the production process.

I start every working morning with a traditional conversation with my deputies. This is not a planning meeting, but strategic planning of work according to the current situation.

I value honesty and decency. Everyone has flaws, no one is perfect. But I can never forgive lies and theft. I don’t like it when a person has an ego higher than his capabilities.

The word “I’ll try” doesn’t exist in my vocabulary. I train my employees not to use it. It's very vague and uncertain. There is no need to try: either “I can do it” or “I can’t.”

Work eats up everything and comes before family. Despite the various nuances, I love my job, I love Metrostroy. It so happens that this is my life.

I love my team. I created it myself. Despite the travel and discipline rules, we have almost no turnover. I dream that the people who follow me and believe me will always have a job and a decent salary.

At Stroymekhservice, the main thing is the people. No matter how expensive the equipment, it is just hardware.

I'm probably a conservative. I love comfort and stability. For the last fifteen years I have been going on vacation to the same hotel in Karlovy Vary. They know down to the last detail what I prefer. It's very convenient.

I hardly watch TV. If only old comedies and educational programs. I really like to read. I used to prefer classics, but after Boris Akunin I got hooked on historical detective stories. I only read the paper version; the e-book doesn’t allow me to immerse myself in the story.
