In the office of Lyubov Averyanova, the chief surveyor of Mosmetrostroy JSC, a unique collection of measuring instruments of the 20th century is stored. All of them were previously used in work, and now take pride of place on the shelves of her closet.
Metro builders were distinguished by their caring attitude towards history and historical relics. The surveying department of SMU-5, headed by Semyon Soloviev, accumulated a selection of geodetic instruments intended for surveying in mine workings. Over time, they failed due to minor breakdowns, were written off and sent to a warehouse. They were replaced by new, modern ones. And the “old men” remained on a well-deserved rest. Then the entire collection was transferred to the chief surveyor of SMU-5 Lyubov Averyanova. Together with it, after the closure of SMU-5, the collection ended up in the Moscow Metrostroy Department.
The most venerable specimen turned 70 years old. This is the TB-1 theodolite, dated 1953.

“I like him the most,” Lyubov Averyanova shared with the Metrostroevets correspondent. – Previously, instruments were miniature and beautiful. And in my work, I preferred the T-2 - this is an optical 2-second theodolite, designed to determine horizontal angles. They were replaced by electronic total stations, which made the work of the surveying service much easier. The stand also has a laser-guided Topaz theodolite. It was used in the construction of an inclined passage at the Chkalovskaya station transfer.
In addition to theodolites, the collection includes levels dating back to 1969 - instruments for determining elevations.
All copies are in good condition. And even though they have long been replaced by modern instruments that immediately determine height and coordinates, with Soviet-era instruments you can even now go underground and work.
Not only the Department stores geodetic instruments. Tunnel Detachment No. 6 also has a collection, which was organized by the former chief surveyor Igor Volkov. It contains a beautiful Swiss theodolite. SMU-6 does not lag behind its colleagues. Their collection of objects is also taking shape.

BTW
The largest collection of surveying tools is collected in the Union of Surveyors of Russia. It presents about 500 instruments and devices. It demonstrates technical devices of the period from the beginning of the 19th to the end of the 20th century and gives an idea of the design features of all classes of geodetic devices.
