Serbian projects

MMC International is participating in the reconstruction of the Stara Pazova – Novi Sad railway section in the Republic of Serbia. As part of this project, the organization was transferred to 46 construction projects of artificial structures (ISS), including overpasses, underground pedestrian crossings and road crossings, railway bridges, and road overpasses.

Metro builders from MMC International began work in Serbia in July 2017. The first task was the construction of a tunnel on the Stara Pazova – Novi Sad railway section. We had to go through two parallel single-track tunnels. The left one is 1156 meters long, the right one is 1086.5 meters long. Before the excavation, which started on June 4, 2018, a large amount of preparatory work was carried out.

– The tunnel route was laid in difficult mining and geological conditions, in waterlogged soft soils. From the northern portals, the tunnels open into the landslide zone within the boundaries of the Fruška Gora National Park. Therefore, the project required the provision of anti-landslide measures with the construction of fortification structures consisting of 822 piles with a diameter of one and a half meters and a total length of 27.7 km,” said Andrei Lojko, Deputy Director of the MMC International Belgrade Branch. – The total number of piles in protective structures at the site is 1012 pcs.

Mining using the bench method began simultaneously from the southern and northern portals along four faces. The temporary support included the stages of constructing a screen from pipes and arch support, spray-concreting and anchoring. The permanent lining of the tunnels was monolithic reinforced concrete with waterproofing.

Construction work is nearing completion. The breakdown of the right tunnel is expected at the end of April 2020, the left - in June 2020.

In parallel with the excavation, in February 2019, MMC International employees began the construction of ISSO facilities. To date, the construction of a water well in Indzhia for the city water supply system, 25 overpasses and two underground pedestrian crossings have been completed.

Two highway overpasses, an underground road crossing, three underground pedestrian crossings and four overpasses are in operation. Work is yet to begin on four more overpasses, three underground road crossings and two railway bridges.

“All ISSO facilities are located within populated areas, in areas of existing communications and at highway intersections, which creates certain difficulties,” noted Andrey Loiko. – Also, work on ISSO depends on the stages of construction of the upper structure of the new railway track and the periodic use of the old track for technological purposes.

Depending on the complexity of the structure, teams of 8 to 35 people work at the sites. Among them are civil engineers, reinforcement workers, concrete workers, welders, and special equipment operators.

Railway Stara Pazova - Novi Sad - section of the high-speed railway Belgrade - State border with Hungary. In fact, the construction is a deep reconstruction of the old single-track railway. For the Republic of Serbia, the new double-track high-speed railway Belgrade - State Border with Hungary is an important strategic infrastructure project that will allow the organization of high-speed rail connections from Belgrade through Hungary to the European railway network.
