We continue the “Keyhole” section. In it, a Metrostroevets correspondent spends one day with a builder, “spying” on his work. This time the hero of the column was Sergey Skvortsov, an electric and gas welder from Stroymekhservice LLC (SMS). He told how he received silver at the masters competition, and what precautions should be taken to avoid injury at work.

Very close to the main office of Mosmetrostroy, on Durova Street, there is one of the shafts for the future Suvorovskaya station of the Circle Line. Here, Stroymekhservice specialists are carrying out electric welding work at the SMU-6 facility. And this is where Sergei Skvortsov works. His task is to weld pipes for collecting technical water from a well 80 meters deep.
NOT BEEN IN SPACE YET
Sergei did not always dream of becoming a welder. By education he is a physical education teacher. But once I picked up the electric holder, I felt my calling. This is how he has been working since 2004 in the construction industry. At first he got a job as a fitter.
– Periodically I tried, studied, trained. It was my hobby,” recalls Sergei.
In 2008, he completed the course and began working full-time as a welder. Afterwards I increased the grades and passed to the maximum level, sixth. Before his “meeting” with Mosmetrostroy, he had to work everywhere: housing and communal services, water utilities, heating networks, ship repair, oil industry, gas distribution plant.
“I’ve gone through all the industries where a welder is needed,” Skvortsov laughs, “the only thing is, maybe I haven’t been in space yet.”
He received his “baptism of fire” in the regions of the far north in harsh conditions in the forest, and three years ago Sergei got a job at SMS.
ALL EQUIPMENT WITH ME
He gets up at five in the morning to start his work day by eight. All his equipment - welding machine, electrodes, cutter, grinder - is portable. In the morning, the mining foreman issues orders to the brigade. The tasks of a welder on a construction site are varied and multifaceted. There is no monotony in work.
Sergey welds metal structure elements. It is very important that when welding pipes, the seam remains continuous. It must end in the place where it began. This will serve as the key to a strong and airtight connection, because welding metal pipes in most cases presupposes a complete tightness of the connection. At the beginning of the working day, it is necessary to check all equipment: overalls and gloves must be absolutely dry, and the welding cable and elements of the welding machine must be insulated, its body must be grounded.
An important point when carrying out any electrical work, including welding metal pipes, is compliance with safety regulations. If they are neglected, you can get a variety of injuries: various burns, including eye damage from an arc flash.
“We have fire extinguishers everywhere, we fence off the work area as required, and make sure that the cylinders are placed ten meters away. And no flammable objects nearby - they are strict about this on site.
The shift ends at eight in the evening, and Sergei goes home to the hostel to begin work the next day with renewed vigor.
GUYS CONGRATULATES
Last month, Sergei Skvortsov took part in the city professional competition “Moscow Masters” in the specialty “Electric welder of manual welding”. And he lived up to expectations, receiving silver.
The knowledge and skills of welders were tested in two stages of the competition. At the first stage, participants underwent a theoretical test of knowledge; the second stage included a practical task.
– In the competition, we first answered 30 questions, and then welded a pipe with a diameter of 159 mm. The guys congratulate me for taking second place. It seems like we should be happy, but there isn’t much joy. I only gave 60%,” Sergei is modest. - Not very happy. It could have been done better.
Colleagues and managers speak of Skvortsov as a very responsible person who clearly knows his business.
