Georgy Danelia: my father was a metro builder

Georgy Danelia, People's Artist of the USSR, director:

My father was a metro builder. He worked as an engineer on the construction of the current Chistye Prudy station. Later he was appointed director of the mine, then chief engineer of the Moscow Metrostroy and the All-Union Metrostroy. I remember the joy when dad took my mother and me to show the new station before passengers were allowed there. It was a harsh time and therefore the luxury in the metro - marble, frescoes, mosaics - looked fabulous. At that time, metro builders were revered as astronauts. The whole country loved them. They created the best underground transport in the world. In the new year, I wish our builders to be comfortable underground and on the ground.
