Underground tram: the easternmost metro of Russia is being built in Krasnoyarsk

02/18/2025

The metro, or rather the metro tram, which has long been needed by citizens, will soon start operating in Krasnoyarsk. The need to build a metro here has been long overdue: the first conversations about the subway began back in the 1960s, when the rapid growth of the city required the search for new solutions for the transport system. The plans at that time were quite general, representing sketches rather than detailed designs. The situation changed in the early 1970s, when the master plan for the development of Krasnoyarsk already included a metro line, although without specific elaboration of the technical aspects.

Construction began at the end of 1995, but soon became a long-term construction project. In 2009, it was decided to stop funding the construction of the metro from the federal budget (previously, the construction of the metro in Russia was financed 80% from the federal budget and 20% from the regional budget), and in 2010 the construction of the Krasnoyarsk metro stopped, since the region did not have the resources for this.

We returned to the project only after the emergence of the mechanism of infrastructure budget loans (IBC): in 2021, the region received funds for the construction of the first metrotram line - and in 2022, construction began to come to life. In 2023, an important event occurred - a mechanized tunnel boring complex was delivered to Krasnoyarsk from Moscow.

“The work is going on intensively. The metrotram in Krasnoyarsk will become an effective alternative to ground transport due to its speed and short distances, which will have a positive impact on the convenience of movement for local residents,” emphasizes Ilshat Shagiakhmetov, General Director of the Territorial Development Fund. Today, he said, about 400 people and 55 pieces of construction equipment are employed on construction sites. “Work is actively being carried out to transfer utility lines, measures are being taken to ensure the safety of cultural heritage sites, installation pits are being built on the site of future stations, while the first tunnel boring complexes “Ekaterina” and “Solomeya” have already passed 900 and 600 meters of tunnels from the Shakhterov Street station,” Vladimir, General Director of the FBU RosStroyControl, said about the progress of work. Shcherbinin.

The current stage of work began in 2022, not without the help of Muscovites - the general contractor for the construction of the metro in Krasnoyarsk - Mosproekt-3. The Krasnoyarsk metrotram will become the second in Siberia and the eighth in the country. The route will make movement around the city more comfortable and faster, and will also reduce travel time for residents by an average of 17%, relieving the transport network,” says First Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing and Communal Services of the Russian Federation Alexander Lomakin about the importance of the project.

The section of the first stage of construction, 10.8 km long, will run from Vysotnaya Street to Shakhterov Street, while the total length of the distillation tunnels will be 19.3 km. Six stopping points are planned on the line, of which one is above ground - “Shakhtyorov Street” and five underground: “Vysotnaya”, “Kopylova Street”, “Vokzalnaya”, “Revolution Square”, “Karl Marx Street”.

An electric depot is designed at the final station “Vysotnaya”, and the neighboring “Ulitsa Kopylova” - the only deep station of all - is being built using the “closed” mining method, its depth will be 43 meters. At Vokzalnaya there is a transition to the railway station.

Authorities say that the metro in Krasnoyarsk will appear in 2026.

The operator of the program for providing infrastructure budget loans is the Ministry of Construction of Russia.

Sergey SHKARIN, director of the Mechanization Department of Mosmetrostroy:

“The metro in Krasnoyarsk is being built by Moscow shields, leased to local builders - two six-meter tunnel boring mechanized complexes Herrenknecht S770 and S772. These shields have been working on the construction of the Moscow metro since 2012, each made eight penetrations, they built running tunnels on the Bolshaya Koltsevaya, Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya, Sokolnicheskaya and Solntsevskaya lines"
